Proposition 19 can make property taxes unaffordable when property passes from parent to child. Creating financial and housing insecurity through higher taxes. Let's reinstate our inter-generational property transfer rights. #FixProp19!
All property is reassessed when passed from parent to child.
Before Prop 19, the property was passed, reassessed, and the property tax did not immediately increase because of Propositions 58 and 193 protections against higher taxes. This created affordable housing and fostered small business growth.
After Prop 19, the property is passed to children or grandchildren and is reassessed. However, in many cases a higher amount of yearly property tax is now due. Many cannot afford the sudden and sometimes over 1,000% increase in property taxes and have to sell.
Voters were deceived by Prop 19 - There was no mention in Ads, Title or Summary that Propositions 58/193 would be removed. Brief history of Prop 19, ads, voter guide.
We need another General Election Ballot vote in 2026 to Fix Prop 19.

EXAMPLE Forty years ago, your parents paid $100,000 for their home. Today it's worth $2.5M. Here is how an inheriting child's taxes can become unaffordable.
In this example, taxes have climbed from $3,000 to $25,000. That's before local taxes and bonds have been added on top!
*You can apply for a limited exemption on the parental home if you qualify. No exemptions on other property - rentals, second homes or family business property.
The inheriting owner may not be able to afford higher Prop 19 taxes.
You may not be able to afford market rate property taxes without.
